Black History Now

As part of our work with City of Portsmouth Museums, we helped develop and launch the Black History Now campaign, celebrating the cultural and artistic contributions of Black leaders from Portsmouth and beyond. The campaign launch was timed to coincide with the exhibit: Art is Revolutionary at the Portsmouth Colored Community Library Museum, featuring artists like Missy Elliott, Ella Fitzgerald, Adrienne Warren, and Graham Washington Jackson, Sr. We also supported the campaign with custom exhibit design, panels and museum materials to enhance the visitor experience, and watched as the exhibit inspired lectures, film screenings, community events, and even visits from some of the featured figures themselves. The following year we were once again given the opportunity to develop the year's theme Forged in Hampton Roads: a History of Black Labor. While I was not the lead designer of the campaign this year, I did develop panels for a secondary exhibit The Dry Dock Affair, held at the Portsmouth Naval Shipyard Museum.
